Scumbria, I think in general people in the US will go for moderate environmental reforms. If they get too bad then you will get a backlash though. The key is to take a balanced approach, one you can build a consensus on. Will we ever return to the anti-environmentalism of the Reagan years? Probably. For example, look at my friend, George W. I can speak with some authority because I have the misfortune of sharing a state with him and have observed him in action. Some of his friends were having some problems with the water quality standards in this state. The solution? Cut the funds for water quality monitoring. Because no one can produce any official figures documenting the water quality deterioration, any complaints are brushed off as "anectdotal". You have to admire the way it is done, it is really slick.

For the real skinny, you need to read the book by Molly Ivins, "Shrub: The Short but Happy Political Life of George W. Bush". She backs up all of her claims with checkable references, besides it is funny. Scary, but funny.
