<font color=red>Sony Unveils Low-Priced Vaio Notebook with AMD's CPU

From ASIABIZTECH - they were the first ones to report Sony's plans of using AMD K6-2+ in some of their notebooks (it was later reported by CNET & ZDnet, etc., two days later!). They are first again to report Sony's unveiling of a low priced Vio all-in-one notebook using K6-2+ 550MHz chip. The article also contains the picture of the notebook.

August 22, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Sony Corp. revealed a low-priced Vaio
notebook PC, equipped with a "Mobile AMD-K6-2+" microprocessor
from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. of the United States on Aug. 21.

The PCG-F70/BP is an entry model of the A4-sized, all-in-one Vaio
Note F Series. The new model uses a 550MHz Mobile AMD-K6-2+ as a CPU.

This is the first time that Sony decided to adopt a CPU other
than Intel Corp.'s.

The leading electronic maker will not attach a suggested retail
price to the product, but estimates the new product will be sold for
less than 200,000yen. (108.90 yen = US$1) [edit < $1900]

The new model will be released in early September as one of the
firm's focus products for the year-end sales season.

The PCG-F70/BP will use Windows 98 Second Edition as its operating
system, and have a main memory capacity of 64MB, 12GB of a hard disk
drive space, a 14.1-inch thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display,
and a CD-ROM drive with a maximum speed of 24x.

For application software, it will be pre-installed with Office
2000 Personal of Microsoft Corp., as well as PictureGear and
MovieShaker. Both software programs were developed by Sony.

The notebook computer will require an AC adapter or lithium-ion
batteries for power. It will be able to operate for about two to
three hours with batteries. It measures 324mm by 265.5mm by 35.8mm,
and weighs 2.9kg.

The model will not be compatible with PowerNow!, the low-power
consumption technology for the K6-2+.
