First, although the Spartans were prone to barracks homosexuality, I do not think it was all that prevalent in Rome. Regardless, my take on that phenomenon is two- fold: in a society where women tend to be held in contempt, and men idealized, it can easily be that one cannot form a strong emotional bond with a female, and therefore one's most intense affections are homoerotic. Since it is often true that emotional intimacy leads to physical intimacy, in the absence of very strong inhibitions, some men carry it into homosexuality. In addition, there is the "jail" factor: in jail, even preponderate heterosexuals may engage in homosexual practices in the absence of members of the opposite sex. So it may be on long marches or in remote garrisons.......
