Aerospace and defense projects get shut down all the time. Lacking further specific info, these curtailments hardly qualify as evil. Many are the height of sanity.

And, BTW, the demise of Boeing's SST hardly coincided with the end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam.

Finally, re space flight - the Original Seven were in the Mercury Program. Period. Some went on to Gemini. Some went on to Apollo. Regardless of the views of any of these men, none were candidates for the first lunar landing. I can tell you from personal experience that NASA went out of its way to stiff the military when they picked Armstrong. This rankled for many years.

I can also tell you that, if you wanted to count the dollars invested, the space shuttles would have USAF painted on them, not NASA.
