Goutama, Remember when HP used the 500 Kbyte version of the Pentium II Xeon instead of the 1 meg version (maybe it was 1 Meg versus 2 Meg) in their multiprocessor servers since they were a lot cheaper and they claimed that their was not a noticeable performance difference? Well, it looks like Intel, the monopolist, has found a way to force people to pay for higher priced versions if they want to use more than two processors in a server: yahoo.cnet.com In addition, the 1-GHz chips can be used in two-processor systems. ... More expensive Xeons come with as much as 2MB of cache and can be used in four-processor configurations. They can force people to use the more expensive versions, since their is no competition. I look forward to the day that AMD remedies this situation. As Jerry says, OEM's enlightened self interest will cause them to support AMD -- so they won't have to continually be shafted by Intel when ever they can get away with it. Pravin.
