Re: They can force people to use the more expensive versions, since their is no competition. I look forward to the day that AMD remedies this situation. As Jerry says, OEM's enlightened self interest will cause them to support AMD -- so they won't have to continually be shafted by Intel when ever they can get away with it.

Pravin,

This day is already here and has been for a while. It's been showing up in the marketplace a little and will start to BIG time in the near future. If the Intel muscle was still here, Rambus memory would be the only choice.

Today I had an interesting conversation with someone well entrenched in the IBM memory division. He explained to me the power of the Intel monopoly. This is nothing new from what we already know, but it's definately interesting to hear it from someone directly involved that is not full of shit and just speculating.

For those of us that follow this game closely, Intel has already lost the battle even though the consequences have not been felt yet. (wait until AMD relies on DDR and INTC on RMBS) Things happen that you can see much ahead of time, at least from an investing point of view.

I liked the analogy I got. IBM has been shipping the type of memory Rambus is claiming patents on since the 80's, but no one actually patented it. It's like claiming a broad patent on the "tire" and then demanding that Ford and Chevy pay you royalties for the past X number of years. My speculation is that the guys at Burlington that are still around from the 80's are eager for a Rambus lawsuit just to have a little fun. My bet is IBM will be the LAST company to get a lawsuit, if it even gets that far before the patents are found to be a joke.

PS- This is MY opinion and NOT IBM's. Even though I may be able to say more, I'm not going to. I can't speak of anything that is "IBM confidential".
