Since day one, I have been questioning Bezos retailing experience. Why would analysts and the equity market have so much confidence in a hedge fund manage running a retail operation?

This reminds me of an old political discussion about the quality of "the team of executive advisors otherwise known as president Reagan", meaning that political leaders are the sum of their team. Sure people come and go, but a good political leader always finds top notch people to cover attrition.

While Bezos had clearly no retail experience, he had shown good vision in identifying the e-commerce bookstore opportunity, and people thought he would have the foresight to assemble a good marketing team. Indeed, within a few months of going public he hired away top notch people from inventory management at WalMart.

Apparently he neglected the marketing side.
