Only my opinion, but if I were buying a new system today, I'd want Windows 2000. If for whatever reason, this was out of the question, I'd then opt for the newest OS available. Unlike cars, where I'd avoid newness at any cost, OS newness can be 'patched' easily. This inconvenience is offset by the rapid decline in support for 'yesterday' software.

I repeat, this is only an opinion. I'm still using Win98, but looking at the 'greener' pastures of W2K like a horse stretching his neck over the fence.
