but it was pre-existing...By what mechanism? It's the same mechanism as all of biological evolution. Some gene or combination creates a brain structure such that the person "feels good" when the rest of the brain inputs seem to be falling in place correctly, meaning that the person is apparantly achieiving his "purpose". Those that just happen to have this gene combination have less tendancy to kill themselves (or mope around instead of going hunting) and so ultimately are more likely to pass on the combination to their offspring. I would predict that among the earliest of humans there were a high percentage that did just stand around waiting for apples to fall in their mouth. These got eaten by lions or something leaving the go-getters on the move. Of course I can't think of a way to test or prove this prediction so it falls in the "Just So" category. Still, in this current era of expanding populations where many more gene combinations can survive I get the impression there are a lot more people who seem to lack motivation than was reported in the past.
