Press Release

Wind River Makes it Easy for Embedded Developers to
Prototype Applications, Learn Embedded Technology with Free
Tools

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 22, 2000--In a move to expose a wider range of early-stage embedded systems developers
to the benefits of integrated design, Wind River (Nasdaq: WIND - news) announced the availability of Tornado® Prototyper for free
download off the web. By making Tornado Prototyper available free, Wind River gives developers easy access to the industry's leading
platform so that they can build non-commercial prototype applications. It also provides software programmers an opportunity to develop
their embedded skill sets at no cost. Greater familiarity with Tornado Prototyper for education and early development will help meet the
fast-growing need for experienced embedded software developers.

Tornado Prototyper consists of the award winning Tornado integrated development environment (IDE) and the VxWorks® embedded
real-time operating system and the popular WindView(TM) visualization tool. It is available immediately for free download from
www.windriver.com/prototyper.

Tornado Prototyper enables software development, including networking and multiprocessor-based applications, to begin as a prototype
before a project is fully-funded. This allows organizations, including startups, planning to build products based on embedded systems to show
proof-of-concept designs before they move forward with the project. In addition, free and easy access to Tornado Prototyper will help
companies keep pace with the explosive growth underway in embedded software as traditional desktop application developers begin
applying their technical talents to embedded applications.

Tornado Prototyper users will have access to a limited set of the WindSurf customer support features. This includes a full set of
documentation, including the Tornado Getting Started Guide, and key word search. Specially created educational tutorials on how to use
Tornado Prototyper with a walk through example, sample application code, and the Tornado IDE multimedia CD will also be available.
Additionally, users will have the ability to interact with each other via the web-based Tornado Prototyper discussion community. Finally, to
enhance the out-of-box experience for users new to the sophisticated software, Wind River has created educational tutorials that walk the
user through installing Tornado Prototyper, running a demo application, and using the WindView visualization tool.

``The embedded industry is on the verge of explosive growth but a relative shortage of embedded developers threatens to hold the industry
back,'' said Curt Schacker, vice president of corporate marketing at Wind River. ``We believe it is Wind River's responsibility to help ensure
that there is a sufficient pool of highly skilled embedded developers to meet the growth of embedded technology. Free availability of
Tornado Prototyper is part of Wind River's ongoing strategy of making products easier for developers to access.''
