FIBERWORKS Selects Optical Solution from Nortel Networks for Metro Access Networks

BOSTON - FIBERWORKS*, an Atlanta-based carrier's carrier providing last mile solutions to businesses in major metropolitan areas, has awarded Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] a three-year contract worth an estimated US$60 million to build all-optical, all-fiber local access networks across the southern United States.

Using Nortel Networks OPTera Metro* solution, FIBERWORKS is bringing fiber directly into office buildings and businesses, eliminating the bottleneck that can occur between long-haul backbone and local access networks. FIBERWORKS plans to begin building Metro Access networks in Atlanta and Charlotte, N.C. by the end of the year, and in 13 other cities by the end of 2002.

"For the first time, businesses will have direct, fiber-based access to the service provider of their choice and will enjoy optical networking and true broadband services from desktop to desktop at previously unattainable speeds," said Scott Burkholder, president and chief executive officer, FIBERWORKS. "Nortel Networks OPTera Metro solutions will enable our new Metro Access networks to deliver the necessary speed and reliability for data transport in today's new era of communications."

"Metro carrier's carriers like FIBERWORKS represent a new, emerging market segment," said Don Smith, president, Optical Internet, Nortel Networks. "Nortel Networks is working aggressively to build its presence in this new market by providing customers with best-in-class solutions that deliver the speed, reliability and revenue potential of the high-performance Internet."

FIBERWORKS Metro Access will offer end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP)-based access and transport services through interconnected fiber optic rings and laterals to the telecommunications industry's competitive local exchange carriers, in-building local exchange carriers, interexchange carriers, and Applications Service Providers and Internet Service Providers in Atlanta and Charlotte.

In addition, FIBERWORKS plans to build networks in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin, and San Antonio, Texas; Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Tampa/St. Petersburg and Orlando Fla.; Raleigh/Durham, N.C.; Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; and New Orleans, La.

Nortel Networks is the global market leader in delivering high-performance optical solutions in the DWDM and SONET/SDH markets according to the Dell'Oro Group, an independent research and consulting firm. Dell'Oro also confirms Nortel Networks leadership in the DWDM metro arena with a 71.1 percent market share.
