Clinton was no more vilified than Gingrich
Gingrich got a nice honeymoon period when he was elected Speaker. For months everyone listened as he paraded his Contract for America proposals in town hall meetings, and Clinton sat down with him and shook his hand on campaign finance reform. He apparently believed Clinton was going to step aside and let him be President and Speaker. Then he got all peevish when Clinton criticized his proposals and the polls and electorate supported him. That's when things started to get ugly for Gingrich. Clinton, however, had been under non-stop sensational charges since before the election.
