Because it was first and primarily developed by Nok and Erick - it's political.

But the have 'switched over' with 3G to WCDMA - note that this is still mostly vaporware.

Regarding the VHS vs. Beta analogy - the technology gap was not as wide. It's proven that most idle time on the internet is spent WAITING for data - a +10 fold increase in speed will drive the market.
