DEC did as you said - it designed and manufactured a series of MIPS-based workststations in the period 1989 - 1992 - these were UNIX based (DEC's version) and they may have had a version that ran VMS.

Sony did the same with their NEWS worstation - MIPS based.

As you noted, DEC was internally developing their ALPHA chip while using the MIPS RISC chips as a stop-gap filler. I'm sure it made MIPS (now part of SGI) immensely happy when the ALPHA chip was announced.

Perhaps Intel should review all MIPS-related patents and see what prior art shows up as part of their DEC counter-assault.
