Yes, telling someone to lighten up is asking them to change the way they are communicating. I would be comfortable asking someone I think I know to lighten up. I would be very uncomfortable asking a total stranger to lighten up unless I was very sure of the situation. You really have to understand the situation and circumstances and players to get the nuances. Even sympathetic, perceptive people miss nuances sometimes, especially when they are not familiar with the situation. Clods wouldn't know a nuance if it bit them. So one always has to make allowances for other people's limitations and blinders.
