Marconi Optical Networking Solution to Light Up Fibernet
  Showcase Network in Germany
PITTSBURGH, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Marconi (LONDON: MNI), a global supplier of advanced communications solutions, announced today that its Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking solutions will be at the heart of a new multi-terabit fibre optic showcase network stretching across more than 30 of Germany's major cities. As part of a contract with Fibernet, Marconi will deliver a network of almost unlimited bandwidth, which will allow Fibernet to deploy key services like wholesale Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) access and IP-based virtual private networks (VPNs), to business customers in 32 cities throughout the country.
The network will be built under a three-phase agreement that will see Marconi supply Fibernet with advanced Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) and DWDM equipment, along with its MV36/38 graphical network management system. Marconi will also undertake all network implementation up to commercial launch.
Capable of supporting 80 separate channels at speeds of up to 10Gbps per channel, Marconi's point-to-point DWDM solution will be used to deliver high- speed data services to business clients in major commercial centers throughout Germany. As well as providing Fibernet's customers with almost unlimited bandwidth, the new Marconi DWDM solution will give Fibernet the opportunity to provide exclusive individual optical wavelengths to carrier and ISP/ASP customers, which, coupled with its national co-location services, will allow the extremely rapid deployment of new national services.
The ability of Marconi's DWDM solution to interface directly with the SDH systems will also significantly reduce Fibernet's network costs by removing the need to purchase the separate transponders normally needed to link DWDM equipment to SDH multiplexers.
"This new network allows Fibernet to provide the quality, performance and bandwidth needed to service even the most demanding and exacting customers," said Rod Smith, Marconi's UK Managing Director.
When complete, the new network will comprise 64 STM-16 SDH add-drop multiplexers matched with Marconi's PLT80 DWDM system. Channels can be dynamically added to or removed from the network as required, and the equipment can be upgraded to support as many as 160 10 G/bit wavelengths per unit with no loss of service. The network also benefits from common management of SDH and DWDM systems through Marconi's icon-based MV36/38 advanced network management software.
The contract for Fibernet's new German network builds on a five-year relationship between the two companies, through which Marconi provided the key SDH equipment for Fibernet's TANet network, launched in the UK in 1996. The fiber-based TANet network now comprises thousands of route kilometers and has points of presence in more than 50 commercial centers across the UK.
Under the terms of the new agreement, Marconi will project manage all aspects of the network build. To help Fibernet meet its ambitious implementation schedule, which will see the new pan-German network fully operational in just 12 elapsed months, Marconi will utilize expertise from its Backnang, Germany office and support from its sites in the UK and Italy.
Marconi's presence in the German market, which was considerably strengthened this year through its acquisition of Bosch Public Networks, was an important factor in securing the Fibernet deal, Rod Smith commented. "Fibernet wanted a solution that would get them to market as quickly as possible, so we needed to demonstrate a very high level of competence and on-the-ground capability in Germany. With the team we've set up, we'll be able to deliver them a network based on the very latest technology in just twelve months' time."
