Marconi Broadband Connects Railway in North Eastern China
15 August 2000

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Railway communications in North-East China are about to undergo a significant improvement with the implementation of a Marconi SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) broadband network in the Ji-Lin region of the country. The Shanghai GPT-supplied system, worth almost USD1 million, is being installed as part of the project to link the major North Eastern cities of Changchun, Ji-Lin and Tumen, with advanced communications and rail networks, known as the 7th Railway Project.

The contract is for the supply of Marconi's SMA-1 and SMA-4 multiplexers, CMUX-2 products and training support. The SMA series are full-connectivity multiplexers which enable operators to tailor their networks specifically to meet local requirements. The SMA-4 can also be upgraded while in service, to support STM-16 operation.

Jim Burton, CEO of Shanghai GPT, said: "The implementation of this network will greatly improve communications in the area and will further enhance Marconi's position in this potentially enormous and highly-competitive market."

Marconi is no stranger to the People's Republic of China, with a large number of local offices, and currently five joint ventures. The country boasts one of the longest SDH networks in the world, in the form of the Marconi-supplied Shanghai, Wuhan to Chongqing link. In addition to networks delivered to utilities and railways, Marconi equipment was also used for the public trunk network spanning four provinces and connecting the vital commercial centres of Xuzhou, Zhengzhou and Xi'an. Capital of the Ji-Lin region is Changchun, which has a population of around 26 million people. It is an important regional centre of economy and apart from being a major centre for the manufacture of railway locomotives and rolling stock, it also has the largest automotive industry in China.

Marconi plc is a global communications and IT company, with 49,000 employees world-wide and sales in over 100 countries. It supplies advanced communications solutions and the key technologies and services for the Internet.
