Marconi Lands Breakthrough 10Gbps SDH Contract with T-Mobil 23 August 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marconi has announced a landmark contract with leading German mobile network operator T-Mobil (Deutsche Telekom Mobilnet GmbH) to supply high-capacity SDH multiplexing equipment capable of carrying traffic at speeds as high as 10Gbps.
The contract is a major win for Marconi, whose SDH technology has been chosen ahead of equipment from T-Mobil's traditional supplier. The contract also consolidates Marconi's growing presence in the German market, which was strengthened earlier this year through its acquisition of Bosch Public Networks, one of Germany's suppliers of carrier-grade networking products.
The new contract covers the supply of Marconi's STM-16 and STM-64 add/drop synchronous multiplexers, which will be used to greatly increase capacity on T-Mobil's fast-growing D1 network. A highly flexible and resilient combination designed to maximise core network performance, the equipment will be closely integrated with T-Mobil's existing NSU network management system.
Under a frame contract dating back three years, Marconi already supplies T-Mobil with entry-level STM-4 multiplexing components and network troubleshooting services. This new deal represents Marconi's first sale of its flagship MSH64 STM-64 high-capacity multiplexer in the German market. Boasting an immense traffic-carrying capacity equivalent to more than 120,000 individual phone calls over each line, the MSH64 is optimised to transport huge volumes of traffic over long distances.
Peter Brown, President, EMEA for Marconi Communications, said the deal is a significant breakthrough for Marconi in one of Europe's most exciting and fast-growing markets. "This partnership with T-Mobil is a clear endorsement of our strategy to become a leading player in key markets. Our successful integration of the public networks division of Bosch Telecom, which we acquired in January of this year, has gained us strong credibility in Germany, which is now Europe's second-largest market for mobile services."
Mr Brown said Marconi's ability to seamlessly integrate its SDH equipment with T-Mobil's existing network management system gave it an edge over other suppliers. "Our position as a leading SDH supplier means we can boast an unbeatable level of technical expertise. Flexibility combined with exceptional performance were the keys to the T-Mobil deal, and our products won on both counts."
Marconi plc is a global communications and IT company, with 49,000 employees world-wide and sales in over 100 countries. It supplies advanced communications solutions and the key technologies and services for the Internet.
