The area of gigabit ethernet over optical fiber looks to grow a lot faster than I previously thought. I read an article in Networking Magazine that made a case for gigabit ethernet on optical being deployed in the metro market sooner than D-WDM. Essentially gigabit ethernet offers increased capacity (no the same as D-WDM though), scalibility, lower cost and the system administrator do not have to learn a new technology (ATM, SONET etc .... which are typical backbone protocols). The last may be the biggest selling point.

Stocks that will benefit are GALT, MRVL and FNSR.

********************************

08:45 ET Finisar Corp (FNSR) 38 7/8: Provider of gigabit fiber optic solutions reported Q1 earnings of $0.03 a diluted share, better that the First Call consensus of $0.02; vs year ago of $0.01; revenue rose 96% to $27.2 mln from the year ago of $13.9 mln

Note also that MRVC owns a position on a system developer that is working in this sector.
