"I don't see why Shaw Cable and CBS would go to the expense to encrypt media that is legally recordable and has little to no value after the original broadcast."

Jay- I think you already know this. I just thought I would toss it out for lurkers to read.

Good point above, and I doubt that is what MPAA(not really a MSO problem) is worried about. What they are worried about is you paying $4 for an on-Demand movie(that the MPAA already milked $8/ticket for), recording it in PERFECT digital format, and handing it to your neighbor at N/C. And they are deathly afraid of a viewer putting it on their hardrive for a hundred million people to pull off a perfect copy at N/C.

Thanks for the mini-rant compliment. I'll say it another way here on the LMT instead of FCTF thread and leave it alone for awhile.

My point. Make it VOD. Charge a BUCK. And no one would bother to "steal" their precious junk. Some might say, "But how's Kenneau Reeves going to make $15 million for six months of lousy acting killing cops with trench coat weapons while playing that cool, cool rock music because he is sooo cool?" I say I don't care.

Bottom line- If Hollywood loses the pipes, they lose control of our tastes and will lose the outrageous revenue streams they get worldwide. And I'm hoping, maybe naively, that once they lose control of the pipes, then we may revert back to a society where quality counts.

Hollywood knows this and have an army of lawyers and lobbyists to control technology and politicians so it does not advance. -MikeM(From Florida)

VOD- video on demand
MSO- cable companies
RIAA- recording industry association of America
MPAA- motion picture association of America
LMT- last mile technologies
FCTF- Frank's thread of high level quality technology discussions
