I'm not sure what you are saying here.
Religions seem to appeal to people who want the community of other people, and who want to feel chosen and special. The appeal IS the group think, to some extent. I don't see any evidence that people want to revert to pure service (and what EXACTLY is pure service? Are you really talking about enlightened self- interest service, where you work to make the world better (in your opinion of course) because you want the world "better"- that doesn't strike me as pure but alloyed with self- interest)- which seems to be what you are saying, I see evidence that people want to hang out with their own.
