Paul:

The air traffic control system uses Sperry Univac Mainframes. They have not even been manufactured for decades. A distributed air traffic control system was proposed but, the FAA nixed it because, it would take their control away (and what government bureaucracy wants to lose people and power?). Distributed within each aircraft traffic routing and control (an airplane internet) would yield increased density (allows more flights and more direct routes), less delays, automatically avoid collisions both in the air and on the ground, and improves safety much more than the current ground control system in place today.

I would rather trust a debugged system from the aircraft companies (insurance costs would make them make sure it was safe (the best control is through the pocketbook)) over that lousy system under government mismanagement any day.
