Siebel System's Chairman on Competition From Oracle: Comment

San Mateo, California, Aug. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Siebel Systems Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Tom Siebel discusses the impact that Oracle Corp.'s new SalesOnline.com sales force-management software could have on his company, which is the leader in the area. The company's shares fell 5, or 2.9 percent, to 167 after Oracle's plans become public.

``There's no news here from our perspective and it will have no impact upon our market. Oracle has been offering their entire suite of enterprise CRM solutions to the marketplace for free for the past two years. They can't get anybody to take it. Now that they have some Web-based thing that they're using, you know, there's nothing here that's going to impact us.

``I am the world's leading provider of sales and marketing customer service systems. Siebel systems, in licensed revenue this year, we're the second-largest applications software company in the world. I deliver 147 products in 25 languages. I have achieved the highest customer satisfaction rates in the history of the information technology industry.''

``Oracle has been trying to get into my market since 1994 and today has maybe one-quarter of one percent market share. They've been offering their products for free in the market for the last two years, and the reason that people haven't been willing to accept their products for free is that they don't solve their business solutions.''

``I do all of the functions associated with running sales automation, customer service and call centers and they don't.''

``They've just been trying to enter the market. And it's arguably been the largest failure in the history of the applications software industry. They have 1,000 programmers. They've been working on this for five years and they have less than 1 percent market share. So the fact that they have another product that they're shipping for free is no news.''
