PH - IRAN CLAIMS 3 BN BBL CASPIAN FIND Aug. 23, 2000 (HART'S EUROPEAN OFFSHORE PETROLEUM NEWSL, Vol. 25, No. 33 via COMTEX) -- Iran said it had discovered an estimated 2.5-3 Bn bbl of recoverable crude oil in its sector of the Caspian Sea. "Preliminary seismic studies show that we have 10 Bn barrels of in-place crude in our 20% of the Caspian Sea, of which 2.5 to 3 Bn barrels are recoverable," Mehdi Mir-Moezzi, deputy head of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) told reporters. Mir-Moezzi added that Iran will soon tender for a deepwater semi-floating rig to explore for and develop the reserves. This first estimate was derived from a seismic survey of the area conducted by a consortium of Shell, LASMO and Veba over the last year. -0- Copyright Phillips Publishing, Inc.
