CSCO moving into optical components would be a grand departure from their core competencies. Nor would it be a move that is compatible with its sales force, nor would their current customers be the customers for components.

Even their engineering staff would be fumbling with this one. They design systems, not components.

Its much like the difference between basic research and applied research.
