The one thing I would add to the equation in the US is data speeds. Even the technology-literate generally do not care whether their cell provider uses CDMA or TDMA, but Americans know the speed of their internet access. I bet more than a handful of PC novices dug out their screwdrivers and upgraded their modems from 14.4 to 28.8, or 28.8 to 56, or even added a NIC to move up to DSL or cable. When the phones, PDAs, wireless modems, and HDR-enabled motherboards list the data speeds CDMA offers, there will be a noted consumer preference over whatever sham T and SBC are promoting at the time.
