Vinod Khosla, partner, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers More recently, there are his investments in ONI and Zaffire Inc.. Trying to tell these two apart is like watching an ad for Doublemint gum. They both play in the metro market. They both specialize in DWDM. And they both add some value-added stuff that no one really understands. Investing in two similar companies is generally considered bad form by VCs (not to mention their clientele). The funny thing is that the Vinod brand is now so strong that it really doesn’t seem to matter. “Brand Vinod” overwhelms such paltry considerations as technology (hah!) and market (pshaw!). Investors’ ignorance of what ONI does is exceeded only by their apathy – they simply don’t care. They’ll happily invest in Zaffire as well, if it goes public, just as long as its products have Hand-Crafted by Khosla stamped on the bottom. lightreading.com
