Colleagues:

Actually, I think it is good that Amazon has no inventory. They do not "back order" the book. They take your order, find out where the book is available and have it drop shipped directly to you from the dealer who has it. The dealer can mail it to you just as fast as Amazon could, and Amazon does not have to stockpile the millions of books it lists on its system. I don't think this method has any built-in delay as has been implied. This is similar to the "just in time" method business is beginning to use for avoiding building large inventories.
