| The present moment is not timeless, it is evanescent. From a spiritual perspective, reviewing at least what is held in common among devotees of various religions, what is wanted is the transcendence of this world, and the glimpse of what is beyond, whether God or Brahm or Nirvana. If any moment is timeless, that one is, for one is glimpsing eternity. And it is only achieved if one engages in profound spiritual discipline, such as praying "without ceasing", or sitting za- zen and meditating on one's koan for years. The nearest thing to giving up all power and control is to become a mendicant, and live by begging. The saddhu in Hinduism, the earliest adherents of the Buddha, the early Franciscans, and the pilgrim of the Russian "The Way of the Pilgrim", all did this. The roamed around, living from day to day, talking of their faith and experiences with those they met, praying and/or meditating regularly. Now there is a real risk and GO! |
