Samsung Electro-Mechanics to Mass Produce Set-Top Boxes for Internet TVs
August 23, 2000 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd. announced plans to mass produce set-top boxes for
Internet TVs starting in August.
"Our set-top box is a product that has been developed jointly with Internet TV Networks, a domestic Internet TV provider, over
the last year," said an official of Samsung Electro-Mechanics.
The Samsung unit said it expects to sell 100,000 units this year at home and abroad.
"Our product employs a Pentium CPU and Microsoft Windows CE operating system, and it also has a 32MB system memory
chip and 24MB flash ROM memory," the company said.
The set-top box enables users to get access to the Internet to receive information on weather, sports and stocks, while watching
TV.
Following Samsung Electro-Mechanics, its sister company, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., plans to release an Internet TV with
a built-in set-top box at the end of this month.
Meanwhile, foreign investors are continuing to sell shares of Samsung Electro-Mechanics for the 17th straight day in a row to
lower their combined equity to 33.21 percent from 36.24 percent.
