Axcelis Technologies Inc. Receives ISO 14001 Certification Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturer to Receive the Highest Environmental Management Standard in the Industry BEVERLY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 24, 2000--Axcelis Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ACLS - news), formerly Eaton Semiconductor Equipment Operations, today announced that it has been certified by NSF-International Standards Registrations, Ltd. to the ISO 14001 standard for its facilities in both Beverly, MA and Rockville, MD.
The ISO 14000 series are internationally recognized standards that define an organization's environmental management system (EMS), and guide the performance of that system to both improve the company's environmental compliance and reduce manufacturing costs. In particular, ISO 14001 requires that organizations monitor and measure the environmental impact of their business practices, consider the environmental effects of their products and services, and conduct regular EMS audits to confirm their progress. ISO is a worldwide consortium of national standards institutes that develop voluntary technical standards to ensure safer, cleaner and more efficient business practices.
``The ISO 14001 certification gives Axcelis Technologies a structured environmental management system that easily identifies how we can minimize our impact on the environment while benefiting our customers,'' said Mary Puma, President and Chief Operating Officer of Axcelis Technologies, Inc. ``It has enabled us to realize cost savings in manufacturing efforts, as well as design tools with better efficiencies and a lower cost of ownership for our customers.''
In order to achieve ISO 14001 certification, Axcelis identified all manufacturing operations that related to the environment, and evaluated each according to the significance of the impact it had, whether positive or negative. Axcelis then used this evaluation to establish an Environmental Policy, and specific Goals and Objectives. Axcelis' Environmental Steering Committee developed an EMS that includes operating procedures, roles and responsibilities, internal auditing, management review and various levels of environmental training throughout the organization. Several NSF-ISR auditors then performed an on-site assessment to validate compliance with the ISO 14001 standard at all manufacturing facilities. NSF-ISR will conduct routine surveillance audits twice a year to ensure Axcelis' continued compliance with ISO 14001.
