Steve,

<< You also said once, that you had a wish list for Qualcomm; would you mind sharing this >>

My wish list for QCOM is not very exotic.

I would very much like see them eventually participate 3GPP.

This may be a bit premature and they seem have accomplished a lot 3GPP2, and their obvious priorities are (and need be) completing standardization of HDR (1xEV-DO & 1xEV-DV) as well as 3xRTT.

Beyond that, there appears be a possibility that ETSI could be mandated take over the maintenance of the standards for the Multi Carrier mode of CDMA as well as the Direct Spread mode of CDMA. This is probably linked Qualcomm participation 3GPP. I think that would increase the possibility of adoption of Multi Carrier (and HDR) by the GSM community.

Next year we will see the proliferation of the initial phases of 2 new air interfaces (1xMC & GPRS) with TDMA-EDGE following the following year. 1xMC appears be a far superior technology either GPRS or EDGE. I would like see barriers its adoption existing spectrum minimized as much as possible.

There is a downside this from a Gorilla gaming point of view, however. Qualcomm currently has relatively complete control of cdmaOne/cdma2000 air interface architecture. Participating the committee based evolution of cdma based wireless mobile technology, potentially diminishes the control that gives them the gorilla advantage today. This is an issue we will have deal with at some time anyway, because it appears, at least at the moment, that the majority of true 3G implementations will use committee based cdma architecture (UTRA DS).
