First, inquiry means nothing unless one is at liberty to come to conclusions from time to time, whether tentative or firm. Second, any conclusion can be modified by subsequent data and reflection. Third, some assumptions are so fundamental that one may need them to proceed, whether or not they are retained in the long run. For example, I assume that the world is independent of me, rather than a subjective illusion, and therefore that there are facts of some import discoverable in it.
