FOSTER CITY, Calif., BOSTON, Mass., and DULLES, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 23, 2000--Inktomi Corp. (Nasdaq:INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software; Adero, a leading provider of network services and enabling technologies; and America Online, Inc. (NYSE:AOL), the world's leading interactive services company, today announced the formation of Content Bridge, an alliance of technology and network service providers which is designed to ensure that Internet online users receive the most up-to-date information available on the Web.

This alliance will provide a platform for cross-network content distribution, enabling any content provider who opts to participate the ability to supply participating member Internet Service Providers (ISPs) with their most current content, while maintaining full control over updating and synchronizing the content on their own sites. This model provides the most efficient, scalable way of enabling the delivery of rich content from content providers to content consumers at the point of Internet access.

Under this agreement, Inktomi will deliver core network infrastructure technology, Adero will ensure content is updated across all member networks and provide centralized billing and settlement services for cross-network transactions, and America Online will deploy Content Bridge technology in its network.

Additionally, America Online has made a minority equity investment in Adero.

Content Bridge is expected to begin rolling out in Fall 2000. Digital Island, Inc. (Nasdaq:ISLD), Exodus Communications (Nasdaq:EXDS), Genuity Inc. (Nasdaq:GENU), Mirror Image Internet, Inc. (AMEX:XLA), Madge.web (Nasdaq:MADGF) and NetRail are the first members to participate in and contribute to Content Bridge.

"This announcement today highlights our continuing commitment to building out our network and bringing our members the best Internet experience available. Working with Inktomi and Adero will enable us to offer our users more of what they want: great content and information that is both fresh and easily and quickly accessible," said Joe Barrett, AOL's vice president for Internet Operations. "The Content Bridge alliance provides an additional option for content providers to maximize existing technology and provide users a streamlined path to their content. In addition, by working with Inktomi and Adero, we'll be able to help improve the overall state of traffic on the Internet by offering both a faster, more efficient experience and an easy-to-use distribution network for all content providers who want to participate in the Content Bridge alliance."

"Inktomi has focused for years on ways to build intelligence and efficiency into the network," said David Peterschmidt, president and chief executive officer of Inktomi. "By providing a highly efficient mechanism for cooperation among networks, we believe Content Bridge represents the next phase in evolving the Internet, allowing all participants in the content distribution value chain to deliver the next generation of fast, reliable Internet services."

"As we align Adero's business model to serve as operator of the Content Bridge alliance, our role will enable access providers, carriers, and hosting providers to focus more on their own global content delivery services and less on maintaining one-on-one relationships with other networks, which helps realize our collective vision of an efficient intelligent Internet," said Jonathan Crane, chief executive officer of Adero. "Content providers will now have access to the real 'edges' of the network. The Content Bridge alliance will be based on open standards and will align the economic interests of all parties in the network--from content providers to end users."
