TOKYO -- Canon Inc. (CANNY or 7751) plans to begin large-scale commercial manufacture of a new generation of lithography steppers in 2001, a company spokesman confirmed Thursday.

Canon unit Optron Inc. will invest about Y4 billion to build a plant to make materials for calcium fluoride lenses - a key component of the new steppers. Canon expects the plant to be complete by next summer, the spokesman said.

The lenses will enable circuit patterns of a width of less than 0.13 microns to be etched on silicon wafers. These wafers are used by semiconductor manufacturers to produce advanced microchips. The company currently has a prototype version of the stepper.

In 2002, Canon aims to sell between 25 and 50 units of the stepper for about Y1.7 billion (about $16.2M @105 yen/dollar) a piece, the spokesman said.

Canon is one of the world's big three stepper makers. Japan's Nikon Corp. (J.NIK or 7731) and ASM Lithography Holding N.V. (ASML) of the Netherlands are the two other major players in this market.
