I've never argued that @Home is better off with Excite; in fact I very often stated the exact opposite.

AOL is #1 because beginners use it as their 1st ISP. They get an e-mail address that they get used to and don't want to change. They like instant messaging and the chat rooms. There is a natural tendancy in humans to avoid change.

@Home needs to convince them that it's worth dropping what they like about AOL and moving on to @Home (or at least move on to @Home and pay the extra $9.95 to keep AOL).

To clarify my position: @Home doesn't need to directly say "we're better than AOL because x, y and z." @Home simply needs to convince people to sign up for its service; leaving their existing, crappy narrowband ISP is implied.
