Good post. I have a couple of comments.

The world outside AOL understands very easily that content and distribution are completely different beasts.

I think that most of the informed people who I've talked to understand this and further, they believe that it is a mistake to try to bundle the two. That is what ATHM has tried to do and so far it hasn't worked.

I can think of no other situation in history where the content is closely connected to the method of delivering it in the minds of the public as it is with AOL.

Case in point would be IM. AOL breaks interoperability so that distribution of the content think called "Instant Messenger" is walled off. Again, same thing with ATHM and Excite.

I can't imagine anybody picking @home over Earthlink (for example) because of the Excite content. Can you?

Nope. I can imagine people choosing @Home over Earthlink and Excite over Yahoo.

What I had hoped for from Excite was a blow-your-socks-off broadband environment that would draw people away from dialup.

I suspect that someone will get that the fundamental differentiator will be the ability to create this "broadband delivery environment". Maybe the gods at ATHM know about this but realize that the ability to realize it is not yet here. Can't predictably control the last mile such that the BB environment will work...yet. One can hope that this will be solved and that the facility over creation idea will be what bails Excite out.
