In the early universe, right after the big bang, the debris of the bang spread out, but so did the universe itself. It's a bit tricky, but the universe as a whole can be thought of as the "shock-wave" of the big bang, just in front of the actual debris itself (galaxies, atoms, light etc).

Since the light and energy is spewing out at about the speed of light and the universe is expanding in front of it (and when I say universe I mean the totality of time & space), the universe was actually getting larger faster than the speed of light. It's still expanding.

The point is, no matter how fast you go, you can't get to the end of the universe since it is already farther away than matter or light could possibly travel. That still does not mean it is infinite, it's just that as you get closer to the "edge" the universe gets bigger.

The best you could come to say is that the universe tends to infinity as elapsed time from the big bang tends to infinity. (Assuming elapsed time, which is a property of the finite universe, could be infinite)
