Johan at Aces believes that the P4 will be clock-for-clock faster than the Athlon:
In my h umble opinion, the P4 should be clock for clock as fast as the P6. Believe it or not, but is pretty likely that
the P4 has a better FPU than the P6!! Why? The P4 offers much more bandwidth via the L2-cache and the 400 MHz FSB than the P6 does.
And do not forget it has a seperate FP Store/move unit, which the PIII has not.

What follows is my speculation only. In most applications, the P4 should perform, clock for clock, equal or slightly better than the New Athlon.
Only in very branch intensive applications (Artificial intelligence for example) the Athlon should still do better.
