ORCL is over $200B because of LE, not Lane. The move to the internet had nothing to do with Lane, and before that the market cap of ORCL was more like $30B. The fact that there was an ORCL strong enough to build on is due, in part, to Lane. ORCL really needed an organization man, and Lane was there to fill that role, in the early 90's. I'd say his biggest contribution was bringing in Henley. Lane built up a consulting organization, but that was becoming an anchor around the company's neck, and he ran sales, which was getting reorganized so often it was hurting their performance.

I don't deny that he made a contribution. What I do think is that almost anyone with his background could have done as well or better, and if ORCL hadn't been in such dire straits at the time, they could have found someone a lot better.
