Looks like Desi Rhoden is going all out for the Ali DDR chipset intro. And who says that there is no DDR conspiracy -- I mean consortium? <ggg>

<<<Hey guys, I know the Japanese language. Here's my translation of the interesting article about the first DDR chipset by ALi.

Title:
ALi's first DDR-memory Chipset was announced for Japanese market. Demonstration motherboards with DDR-266 separate-North/South type were made public.
Taiwan's Acer Laboratories (ALi) announced the first Chipset which supports the DDR memory for the Japanese market. It was announced in the U.S. in July 26 which supports Pentium II/III and Celeron (Slot 1/Socket 370). It includes a lineup of four types: Aladdin Pro 5 for desktop, Aladdin Pro 5M for Mobil PC, AliMAGiK 1 for Athlon/Duron (Slot A/Socket A) desktop, and MobileMAGiK 1 for Mobile PC.
The sample shipments of all of the chipsets have started and the quantity shipments are expected in Q4. Pricing for 20K lot is Aladdin Pro 5 = $33, Aladdin Pro 5M = $38, ALiMAGiK 1 = $31 and MobileMAGiK 1 = $36.
The company's marketing manager, Mr. Andrew Lin said "With these chipset, DDR's deployment may become earlier than expected before". He emphasized that "This is another step in the direction where DDR is becoming the mainstream in the PC industry".
As reported in the earlier PC Watch news, the chipsets introduced today are made of two kinds: the two North Bridge chips, "M1651" and "M1647" which are for Slot 1/Socket 370 and for Slot A/Socket A respectively and the two South Bridge chips, "M15345D+" and "M1535+" which are for Desktop and Mobile PC respectively. These two sets provide a total of four configurations.

Excerpts in the Q/A session after the announcement:
To a question of whether one can manufacture a motherboard which supports both DDR and SDRAM (not simultaneously), the answer was that there is no technical problem, but due to the increased cost, no such requests have been made by system makers or mobo makers.
A Samsung representative said Samsung is now manufacturing 128Mbit DDR and preparing for the production of 256Mbit DDR memory. In early next year, it can produce 512 Mbit DDR. He asked PC makers to design DDR based models without worry emphasizing that the DDR supply infrastructure is being readied.
Mr. Desi Rhoden of Advanced Memory International said about RDRAM, "For PC system, the price is everything. From that viewpoint, the result is obvious", implying the superiority of DDR. The ALi president, Mr. Chin Wu also said "Since ALi has the Rambus license, it is prepared to provide (RDRAM) products, if the market want them. But, that requires other conditions such as the supply of memory module besides the chipsets. Therefore, he believes the DDR is it for the near future."

In another room after the announcement, Iwill showed a demonstration machine using the "KA266-R" which uses the ALiMAGiK 1 which was introduced on August 1, 2000. Besides the "KA266-R", it also displayed a motherboard which can completely split the North Bridge and the South Bridge. According to Iwill, the "KA266-R" will be available on October 1, 2000.
The demo PC had the 750MHz Athlon (Thunderbird) with 64MB of DDR-266, GeForce2 GTS running the demonstration of 3DMark2000.
