All-There's a short sidebar article in the most recent Technology Review magazine concerning "smart antenna" This is a pair of antenna for wireless receivers (instead of the usual single antenna)Each antenna listens for the cell transmitters giving the strongest signals . The receiver ignores the weaker signals and a "space-time" algorithm restores the timing and sequence of the code used by the cellular base stations. Sorry, I can't be more specific, it's a very short article. The inventor claims says there could be a hundred fold increase in reception accuracy and a three fold increase in the maximum number of users per band. The research was funded by Texas Instruments, who hopes to have them on the market within 5 years.
What does this mean to GG investors? It might extend the lifetime of non CDMA systems. An extra antenna wouldn't add much bulk or cost to a cell phone and it might allow operators to triple the capacity of older systems at little or no expense to themselves.
