Microsoft's .NET initiative is several things:

(1) It is an attempt to continue to derive revenue from its existing products, for which consumers and IT managers are becoming more and more reluctant to purchase upgrades. People don't like to buy Microsoft "upgrades" because they know that the upgrades rarely improve the previous version and usually introduce intentional incompatibilities with Microsoft's competitors (ask any DRDOS user or QuickTime plugin user). So by forcing users to subscribe to a service, Microsoft eliminates its final impetus to improve its products (as we all know, the only remaining effective competitors to Microsoft's monopoly products are older versions of those same products).

(2) It is a predatory attempt to use its Apps and Ops monopolies as a wedge into the Application Server market.

(3) It is an effective antipiracy weapon.

(4) It is a tool for collecting data on user activities. Microsoft already keeps a fat database full of its WebTV viewers' TV viewing preferences. Now they can keep tabs on what their users do in their offices and homes.

You'll notice that nowhere on this list is there anything that will benefit consumers. That's why I call it useless. The only potential benefits I've heard of are things that you can already do for free on the Internet, like TCP/IP filesharing and virtual disks. Am I missing something exciting here?
