I'm really doing is pointing out how critical unwarranted assumptions about what they mean both to the public and ATHM management is in determining who's on first.

To most "content" is anything people will come to see, no matter how lame or absurd it might be. You would rather it be seen by people as something more. What exactly you'd like "content" to be I've never been sure of. Who are you to decide? It is up to the viewers/users of the content to decide what "content" is to them.

You have continually shown that you are confused about what are the underlying issues and I am pointing out this is caused by the ambiguity of shifting definition.

Then clarify your definition.

Consider your definition below. It is perfectly unclear. How convenient.

My "definitions" are deliberatly imprecise and generic. People are imprecise beings. You can argue technicalities if you like, but it serves no purpose to the goal.

Similarly empty space has "content", because content has form.

If people would visit a blank web page it would be content too. Not many would I suspect.

Every web site is a "portal" because the Internet is almost fully interconnected.
To some extent that is true, almost every web site is some percentage a portal. Yahoo, Excite et all are a bigger percentage than most. Life is like fuzzy logic. You probably know the math better than I.

there must be a field of action where the jousters spar.
There is a very clear field of action. It is in the pocketbooks of the consumers and also physically exists in their homes. Money goes to A, or it goes to B. That is competition. Yes- it is not the only kind of competition that exists, but it is competition.

Somehow you don't believe the concept that people weigh the alternatives and make a choice, nor that external factors can influence that choice. You claim that it is obvious. I cant imagine how you can come to a conclusion like that. You really do act like you live in academia.

ATHM must concentrate on adding unencumbered revenue sources on existing subs.

Darn good point. The big question of course is how. At this point you need to get past the generalities of words like "content" and "e-commerce" and get to substance. Details. I have no clue what amount of revenues are generated by @home users beyond subscription fees, but I bet its pretty small right now. I consider this a major unknown factor.
