RE: The CPU (1 GHz Tbird), when Idle (under w2k) runs at 32C to 35C, with case at 25.

Wow, that’s cool my units generally run 38C to 40C with case at 35C. I couldn't find boxed units so I went with the Golden Orb. In fact I just sat down from wasting 1/2 a day with the damn things to waste some time checking on AMD stock.

It turns out that 3 out of 4 tbird 900s were overheating with the ORB, I switched to a different heat sink and they ran fine. Being of a stubborn nature I decided to find out what the problem was. At first glance it looked like they sat crooked on the CPU (one side on the rubber pads the other not). I checked with another guy that uses the ORB and he said "yea they shouldn't sit on the rubber pads at all". I tried to mount it differently but no way. Then I decided to look at one that did work and noticed that the color of the thermal pad was pink and the one that didn't work was gray. It turns out that when you pull the tape off the thermal pad it may leave a piece of plastic on top of the thermal material.

I carefully removed the plastic (trying not to remove the thermal material) and they all work great now. At full load the 900s run up to about 46C.

Thanks for the links it is always good to know of good sources.
