LPS5, thanks for the responses.

In your opinion, is it worth the effort for a scalper (in my case, typically 1-10 minutes) to try to discern who is using an ECN: MM, unaffiliated daytrader, or retail investor?

I really find myself agreeing with Gene's mantra about just watching the price action. Yet I wonder if it's useful (or just tilting at windmills) to try to dope out who's doing what. My sense is that MMs can be as anonymous as they want to be, whenever they want to be, whether trading for themselves or for a customer. Given that, it's logical to conclude that searching for an AX is no longer a matter of identifying a market force with a particular MM. Rather, one should simply be sensitive to ax-like pressure and understand that FBCO can morph into BRUT or BTRD at any time. Do you agree with this?

And I welcome a response from any other professional trader, especially Gene.
