expanding into nothingness
The problem with the ripple analogy is that it implies that the universe is expanding into nothingness. The implication here that nothingness is just like regular space only without the galaxies and light. Sort of like the universe is expanding within a larger universe. That was not the model I wished to convey. The space of our universe only exists because there are things expanding within it.

This is a good mental excersise, because it's clear to me that I don't have a full enough grasp of the subject to make it clear to my mind and can't explain it well either. I need re-read some books where I think I was daydreaming when I thought I was understanding.
