Heinz, I think that this is the reason for such low public participation in the elections. In '96, less than 50% of eligible voters actually voted. Since, as Coolidge noted, the "chief business of the American people is business," there is a desire in the U.S. for political stability and managed change. But I think that as a result, many highly political programs such as Social Security become institutionalized, and are very difficult to improve (or repeal, for that matter).

I read a lot of different sources of news, right and left. A few days ago, you mentioned the Gini index. The Gini index for the U.S. is the highest since the Great Depression. I could send you some information on this if you are interested, but I'll need to email an attachment to you.
