HI JIM,
as you know i am in the transportation management field and we are already beginning to see the higher costs of fuel, customer demand dropping, and owner operators selling their trucks. Most truckload carriers will see lower profits this year due to higher fuel costs, drivers getting out of the business and lack of freight. Next time you drive by a big rig sales lot, notice all of the trucks that are for sale, there is a huge glut on the market, and prices are very very low.
Trailer lease lots are also packed with trailers that are for sale/lease....most trucking companies are pulling in their horns.
Owner operator margins are very slim, and with the cost of fuel some are selling out.....i think it will only get worse.
My company hauls over 400 loads per week for one large retailer, and in july we were down to 250 per week, and just now getting back in the high 300's, could be a lean fall the way it looks.
take care,
