My perception of the Internet is this: as in real life, one can only spend so much time somewhere, and therefore each of us tends to find sites that we revisit, and only go further when doing research. As in real life, only so many people can participate in a conversation before it becomes unwieldy, and therefore the circle of people one really gets to know is fairly small. As in real life, we do not bond with people with whom we have only casual contact, and therefore distinguish between friends and acquaintances. As in real life, there are community leaders and casual participants, and several levels in between. As in real life, there are rivalries and even enmities. In other words, the Web is real life, and merely allows people in disparate geographic areas to come together on the basis of common interests........
